Why 10K Steps Matter & 3 Ways to Get There

As a running coach, I talk to so many people who want to feel better, move more, and build a consistent routine—but life gets busy. Between work, family, and everything in between, movement often falls to the bottom of the list. But here’s the truth: you don’t need hours of training or perfect conditions to stay active. What you do need is intention.

That’s why I’m such a big believer in the power of 10,000 steps a day. It’s more than just a trendy number—it’s a practical, sustainable way to keep your body in motion, even on non-running days. And the benefits? They speak for themselves:

🧠 Better mood + clearer mind
❤️ Healthier heart and metabolism
🔥 Natural calorie burn and energy boost
🦴 Stronger joints and bones as we age

But what I love most? Hitting that step goal keeps you moving toward your goals—physically and mentally.

So how do you get there, even on the busiest days? Here are 3 of my favorite coach-approved ways to sneak in more steps:

1. Choose Movement You Enjoy

Not every step has to come from a run. In fact, some of the best movement happens when you're doing something you like: walking the dog, chasing your kids, taking a sunrise stroll, or meeting a friend for a walk and talk. That’s one reason I started the Run Well Collective Run Club—it’s not about pace or mileage. It’s about community, consistency, and finding joy in showing up.

2. Move in the In-Between Moments

Coaching tip: the little moments add up. Pace while on phone calls. Stretch while your coffee brews. Walk around the house while brainstorming. These micro-movements build momentum and help you stay connected to your goals throughout the day.

3. Make Walking Part of Your Routine

Short walks are underrated. A 10-minute stroll after lunch or a lap around the block before dinner can improve digestion, clear your head, and help you hit your step count. Bonus points for fresh air and sunshine—nature is a natural mood booster.

Bottom line? You don’t need to be perfect—you just need to be consistent. Every step you take supports your fitness, your mindset, and your long-term health.

So whether you’re lacing up for a run or squeezing in extra steps during your day, keep going. You’re building a lifestyle that lasts.
